Tone duration: 4th is shortest 3d is longest.

Tone pairs: classical Chinese was monosyllabic and in its earliest days a-tonal. Contemporary Chinese is mostly bisyllabic and tonal. Tones should be learned in pairs. Admissible tone pairs in Chinese:
